The Greatest Thing
October 14, 2006One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “What commandment is the foremost of all?” Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD; AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH. [Deuteronomy 6:4-5]‘ “The second is this, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF. [Leviticus 19:18]‘ There is no other commandment greater than these.”
-Mark 12:28-31 NASB
The greatest thing we, as Christians, can do is follow God’s instruction. As stated in Mark 12, the greatest commandment is “The Lord our God is one Lord; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.” (Deuteronomy 6:4-5 NASB & Mark 12:29-30 NASB) If we simply love the Lord with all our heart [God is in the very fibers of your being], soul [God is who you are], mind [God is constantly in your thoughts], and strength [God is the one who drives your activities], everything else in life will follow. Think about it, if our entire existence is to love God, then we will strive to follow His will. If we are striving to follow His will, then our sin nature will be pushed out by our desire to follow God’s Will! (Luke 6:45)
The question we should be asking is, “How do we constantly strive to follow God’s will, and not our sin nature?” If we memorize scripture, and keep key verses on the forefront of our thoughts, God’s Will shall be on the forefront of our thoughts. Therefore we will be filling up ourselves with His word and Will, and shall push out our sin nature. (Luke 6:45)
